Many of us suffer from some mild and irritating stomach problem, such as pains and bloating, that we just put up with. But this week researchers have discovered that there’s a fruit that can counteract the worst symptoms.
Blueberries can alleviate the effects of stomach troubles such as colitis – and they can even protect people from developing gastro-intestinal problems in the first place if they are taken with a probiotic. The fruit is rich in polyphenols, which have anti-microbial and anti-oxidative qualities, and it had a strong effect on everyday stomach problems when it was tested against other fruits and produce, such as rye bran and oat bran.
The effect was magnified when the fruit was eaten with a probiotic, researchers from the Lund University in Sweden discovered. Eaten together, acids that activate the immune system increased dramatically in participants’ blood.
